Modern Snakes & Ladders: Jungle Journey is a game for Meta Quest. It has no account, no advertising, no analytics and no in-app purchases. We, SaneBits, do not collect or store any information about you. If you choose to play online, our relay passes match information, and live voice where voice chat is on, between the players while the room is open, as described below.
On your headset
Your settings, your explorer (the name you typed or picked and your look), your expedition journal, a solo expedition you left part-way, the last room code you used and the list of players you blocked are saved in the game's own storage on your headset. They never leave it, except as described under Playing with other people below. Uninstalling the game deletes them.
Hand and head tracking
The game reads your hand and head positions from the headset so you can strike the die, climb ladders, point and pinch, and so it can place you on the trail. When you play alone, this information is used on the headset only, while you play, and is not stored or sent anywhere.
Playing with other people
You can play with up to three other people nearby on the same Wi-Fi, or online. When you host or join a room, the headsets in it share:
- each player's name and explorer look (face, skin, hair or hat, outfit and scarf colour);
- whether they are ready, whether they turned on voice with strangers, and whether they chose gentler rides;
- their head and hand positions, including how far each finger is curled, so that each explorer moves like the person playing it (about 15 times a second);
- what they do in the match: strikes, calls, climbs and reactions such as a wave or a cheer, and the match itself (positions, turns and the dice check that keeps every roll fair);
- live voice, where voice chat is on (see Microphone and voice chat).
There is no text chat. Nobody stores this information: the other headsets use it only while the room is open and discard it when it ends.
Two random numbers are kept on your headset. One lets you rejoin a room you dropped out of. The other identifies your headset to the host of a room, so that a host who blocks you can keep your headset out of the rooms they host; the other players see only a scrambled form of it. Neither is linked to your Meta account or to who you are.
Names. In public rooms (Quick match), names that could hurt others are shown as "Explorer". In Settings › Privacy you can choose to see strangers' names always, only while you look at them, or never.
Nearby (same Wi-Fi)
When you open the Multiplayer board, the game listens on your local network for nearby expeditions. Headsets on your local network see that an expedition exists, with the host's name and the number of players. The room's information, and voice if the host turned it on, travels directly between the headsets over your local network. None of it goes to the internet, to SaneBits or to any third party. Voice chat is off on the same Wi-Fi unless the host turns it on, since you can usually hear each other in the room.
Online (optional, uses the internet)
The game connects to SaneBits only if you choose Create room, Join with code or Quick match. When you do, your headset connects to SaneBits' expedition relay, a service we run on Google Cloud in Belgium (EU).
- The relay passes the information listed above, and live voice where it is on, between the headsets in your room, and nowhere else. It does not read, record or keep any of it.
- The relay handles your device's IP address and the room code to make the connection and to limit abuse. Its rate-limit records hold only a scrambled (salted and hashed) form of the address, stay in memory, and are gone within an hour.
- We keep only anonymous service records, such as how many rooms ran, for how long and how much data they used. They contain no names, codes, voice, positions or IP addresses.
- Google, which hosts the relay, processes connection data such as IP addresses on our behalf as our service provider.
- Private rooms (Create room, Join with code) are open only to people with the room's six-letter code.
- Quick match lists public rooms so that others can join them. The list shows only how many people and computer explorers are in a room, how many seats are open, whether a match is under way and how far its leader has climbed; never names or codes.
The game uses network permissions only for playing with other people: nearby play on your Wi-Fi and, if you choose it, online play through the relay.
Microphone and voice chat
Modern Snakes & Ladders has voice chat so that friends can talk while they play.
- When it is on. Voice is on in private online rooms (the host can turn it off for the room). On the same Wi-Fi it is off unless the host turns it on. In public rooms (Quick match) your voice reaches another player only if both of you have turned on Voice in public matches in Settings › Voice, which is off until you choose it.
- The microphone permission. The game asks for it only the first time you are in a room where someone could hear you, never at launch. If you refuse, you can still hear the others, use reactions and play as normal.
- What is sent. While voice is on and you speak, your microphone's sound is compressed and sent live to the headsets in your room: directly on the same Wi-Fi, or through the relay online. Silence sends nothing. Nobody records or stores it: the relay forwards it as it arrives, and each headset plays it and discards it. SaneBits never hears it.
- Your controls. Turn your microphone off, use push-to-talk, or turn on Data saver at any time, from your wrist or Settings › Voice. You can mute or hide any player, or block them (blocked players are muted and hidden, kept out of rooms you host and out of your Quick matches, and remembered on your headset until you unblock them in Settings › Privacy). A room's host can remove a player and block them from coming back.
Meta Quest platform services
This version of the game does not use Meta's platform services: it does not receive your Meta user ID, your profile or your friends list. Invitations through Meta and reporting a player through the game are not available yet. If you meet a player who behaves badly, block them, and tell us at support@sanebits.com.
Children
Modern Snakes & Ladders does not knowingly collect information from anyone, including children. In a room, other players see the name you type and your explorer, so choose a name you are happy for the people in your room to see. Voice chat with strangers is off unless both players turn it on. Parents can keep children to private rooms with people they know, or to solo and same-Wi-Fi play.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, the new version will be published here with a new date. Questions: support@sanebits.com
